What is a wire and how to choose the right wire or cable?

What is a Wire?

Wire refers to a single, usually cylindrical, strand or rod of metal which is used to carry electricity and telecommunications signals. Wire is commonly formed by drawing metal through a hole in a die or draw plate. The term wire is also used more loosely to refer to a bundle of such strands, as in 'multi-stranded wire', which is more correctly termed a wire rope in mechanics, or a cable in electricity.

Although usually circular in cross-section, wire can be made in square, hexagonal, flattened rectangular or other cross-sections, either for decorative purposes, or for technical purposes such as high-efficiency voice coils in loudspeakers.

How to Choose the Right Wire or Cable?

In selecting a wire or cable for an application, the following factors should be considered:

Is the material to be bare, tinned or plated copper, silver plated or nickel plated copper, or perhaps, aluminum or bronze, nickel or other alloy?

What temperature will the wire be subjected to in the application in which it will be used? Will the wire be exposed to moisture, chemicals or oils?

Will the application require a protective covering such as nylon, cotton, glass or metal braid over the insulation?

Will the wire require processing such as stripping or cutting? Will processing be done by hand or with an automated machine?

EXAMPLE: The hardness of PVC may differ between manufacturers, and thus, potentially affect the ease at which the wire may be processed.

Different equipment may produce different results. However, machine adjustments can typically be made to help accommodate these differences.
